Forged Line
Project type
Sand Mold Cast Iron
Date
April 2024
Location
Oxford, MS
Forged Line is a cast iron sculpture derived from the form of maritime rope, translating a flexible, load-bearing material into a fixed, circular structure. The work draws from nautical rigging systems, where rope functions as both connective tissue and structural necessity.
Using sand and resin molding, a two-inch rope was cast in iron, preserving its twists, compression, and surface detail. The transformation from pliable fiber to rigid metal emphasizes the shift from tension to permanence, while retaining visible evidence of strain and use. Although this piece departs materially from my rebar-based works, it continues an investigation into transformation through casting and the behavior of materials under pressure.
The circular configuration removes the rope from its original utility and reframes it as a closed system—one without a beginning or end. In this form, Forged Line operates as a study of continuity, endurance, and structural interdependence, grounded in maritime tradition but resolved through sculptural process.
