Knots Series

Project type

Sculpture Series

Date

May 2024

Location

Norman, OK

The Knots Series consists of steel sculptures formed by heating and twisting rebar into knotted configurations derived from rope structures. The work investigates how a rigid, industrial material can be coerced into forms typically associated with flexibility, tension, and binding.
Each piece is made from continuous lengths of rebar that are bent, twisted, and compressed while hot, eliminating joints and welds. The resulting knots retain visible strain, tool marks, and irregularities, emphasizing the physical limits of the material and the force required to redirect it. Rather than representing rope, the forms function as translations—steel behaving as though it were fiber.
Across the series, repetition and variation are used to test how knot structures distribute stress and maintain cohesion. The work treats connection as a structural condition rather than a symbolic one, focusing on how materials hold, resist, and adapt under constraint.
